How to Incorporate Closet Orphans

Last Saturday night involved pizza, playing around with Google Analytics, and reading about ostrich feet. If you are looking for a nerd party you've come to the right place.

Google Analytics is fun (fun?) because it shows me what search terms people are using to find GCOGH. It turns out that one of the top terms is "how do I incorporate closet orphans" as well as "clueless closet for computer". Since the whole point of Go Chic or Go Home is to help members make the most of what they have this little gem made my weekend (that and the ostrich feet).

I've discussed wardrobe maximization here, and the other week I shared how member Karina is using her inspiration boards to create capsule wardrobes. Here are a few more ways to make the most of what you have thanks to members Dawn, Laura, and Audrey.

Wear Your Closet

Dawn started a project and inspiration board called "Wear My Closet". She explains:

"In the spirit of making sure I wear everything I own, I've decided to set myself a challenge--every day (M-F at least) I must wear a different piece of clothing from my closet until I've gone through my entire wardrobe. I'm allowed to repeat garments (like the same pants with different tops, etc), but each day I have to wear something "new". Let's see if I can actually pull this off."

Dawn is doing an awesome job of keeping up with her challenge and you can see all of the outfits she has worn here.

Seasonal Transitions

While exchanging e-mails with member Laura she mentioned an inspiration board she had created called "Wear Before Spring". She explained that the goal is to remove every piece from the board as she wears them this month. Such a fantastic idea for making the most of seasonal clothing!

GCOGH 101

Last but certainly not least, check out Audrey's awesome post about using GCOGH to make the most of lonely closet pieces. She is definitely a pro when it comes to the community.

I just started using GCOGH, mostly because I am just a week away from third trimester pregnancy! From the beginning I wanted to see if I could go through the entire pregnancy without buying anything, so I started scouring for ideas in my closet. After trying on almost everything and packing away most of it, I have a streamlined closet I'm determined to make work for the remaining 3 months! GCOGH has been so fun and helpful in visualizing outfits, and saving ensembles for those days where I really feel like I have nothing to wear! I've also seen what is more versatile and not (surprises for both!) by the number of outfits I can make. Thanks!

Disclaimer: I do own 4 pieces of maternity clothes as gifts from my mom, which was sweet of her...but they're winter clothes when my third trimester will be in warmer weather in sunny CA :).

Welcome, Sandy, and congratulations on your soon-to-be little one! I'm so happy GCOGH is helping you get organized. Isn't it amazing how many outfits are hidden in your closet once you're able to visualize everything on one screen? And yes, I think we all have those days where it feels like there's nothing to wear. On more than one (unprepared and late for a very important date) occasion I've run to my GCOGH ensembles, clicked on a pair of shoes I wanted to wear and thought, "Oh yeah, I forgot about that outfit." So neat to see everyone using the community in their own interesting ways. :-)

I came across a blogging friend's self challenge to "wear something 3x a week or it goes": http://sheilaephemera.blogspot.com/
I'm going to try a 2x a week version -- using a GCoGH board, "wear it twice in one week or BANISHED" to collect my victims!

Thanks Cynthia! :). You know, now that I'm getting the hang of this, I'm already itching to upload other parts of my closet for post birth outfits!

I've been inspired to look at my closet orphans too but my results ended differently. I picked out the orphans that I hadn't worn in a year and/or moved houses 3 times and hadn't worn, put these items on eBay, made a little money and bought 2 (so far) more functional items that can combine with what I already have. I think I've sold 5 pieces and purchased 2 A-line skirts in denim and black. The other thing I love about GCOGH is that it gives me confidence to mix and match colors. That has opened a whole NEW world in my closet! No closet orphans here:)

I love Dawn's "wear my closet" idea. What a great way to revive your old classics and unload the closet duds!

@Anne - That's fun! I suppose there will be leniency if the weather doesn't cooperate, but I guess SoCal is pretty predictable. ;-)
@Joanna - You make a fantastic point. Using GCOGH has helped me buy less, and what I buy is far more "functional" in that it goes with more of what I own. Probably because I finally know what's hiding in my closet. And colors, yes! Definitely with you on that.
@Jackie - Isn't it great idea? Dawn is a GCOGH pro.

@Sandy - You should! It's funny, so many members have e-mailed me to say that they intended to only upload part of their closet, but once it started coming together they couldn't stop. Apparently GCOGH is the Pringles of everyday fashion. (Now there's a tagline.)

These are all wonderful ideas. I need to make the most of my pieces as I have many that I thought I would wear then didn't find as many ways to wear them as I thought I would. I'm using the create feature to attempt to incorporate each piece in at least five outfits. I really love Dawn's idea, it seems like a straightforward way to incorporate every piece while still being able to wear the basic outfits I love and want to wear over and over again.

My "break" from work has been extended way too long because I got caught up on GCOGH. Oops. I love all the ideas here. My friend did a "Wear My Closet" kind of challenge and she kept track of what had already worn by turning the hanger the opposite way after wearing something. I thought that was a really easy way to manage everything!

Brittany - The 1:5 Project, I like it! There are still some lost sheep in my closet so I may actually try this with a few pieces.
Audrey - All of the time you spend on GCOGH just means you'll be extra prepared when it's time to get dressed. The GCOGH force is strong with you. ;-)
